Our Swimming Lessons: What to Expect

Steve Wallen Swim School Curriculum

At Steve Wallen Swim School, we take pride in decades of teaching experience and the many success stories that show how effective our program is for swimmers of all ages. We know what it takes to spark a love of the water and guide swimmers toward strong skills and water safety.

Over the years, we have refined our learn to swim curriculum into a proven, reliable system. The progress and confidence our swimmers gain speak for themselves.

We know you have many choices when it comes to swim schools, but the advantages of learning to swim with
Steve Wallen Swim School make that choice easy. Before we explore our curriculum, here are just a few benefits:

  • Two convenient locations: El Dorado Hills and Roseville
  • Teaching swimming is all we do!
  • State of the art indoor facilities offering ideal learning conditions year round
  • Over forty years of instructional experience
  • Small class sizes for individualized attention
  • Highly trained, closely supervised instructors
  • Family owned and operated: you become part of our swim family

Unlike other programs, our curriculum is designed for success at every stage. We never “fail” a child or “hold them back.” Instead, we embrace continuous learning and continuous evaluation. Every swimmer progresses at their own pace and is always learning something new.

Our curriculum emphasizes the essential skills needed for water safety and the foundational techniques for freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke. Skills are introduced when a swimmer is ready, and each key milestone is rewarded with a ribbon.

Our SWSS Milestone Ribbon Program helps swimmers track their progress and celebrate major achievements. Here are the core skills students learn at Steve Wallen Swim School:

  • Face in the Water is Magic: learning to enjoy the feel of the water
  • Breath Control: blowing bubbles instead of inhaling water
  • Streamline: shaping the body like a pencil for smooth movement through the water
  • Backfloat: relaxing and letting the water support the body
  • Jump, Turn, Swim: learning to safely recover from a water entry
  • Rollover: rotating from front to back and back again
  • Freestyle: traditional front crawl
  • Backstroke: swimming comfortably on the back
  • Butterfly: powerful, rhythmic competitive stroke
  • Breaststroke: a versatile stroke used for both power and leisure

Feel free to visit either of our swim school locations in El Dorado Hills or Roseville
