How Swimming Lessons Benefit Kids with Special Needs
Swimming lessons are an exhilarating and worthwhile experience for all children, with countless benefits. When swimming lessons occur regularly throughout the year, children gain confidence, physical strength and endurance, and improved cardiovascular fitness. Children participating in regular lessons also learn valuable social skills such as turn-taking, peer support, and the teacher-student relationship.
These benefits can be advantageous for children with particular needs and many more. In contrast, some children with specific special needs are excluded from many physical and athletic activities. At Steve Wallen Swim School, we offer adaptive swim lessons to help children with special needs flourish in the water. We know how great the water is and how vital swimming lessons are, so we are ready to support all children’s learning.
Both of our locations, in El Dorado Hills and Roseville, offer drop-in, private, semi-private, and small-group lessons for children of all abilities. Our expert team of swimming instructors realizes that children with special needs may need particular attention and are ready, to the best of our abilities, to provide and instruct based on those specific needs. While our swim instructors are not licensed therapists, they are experienced and specially trained to work with swimmers of all ages and abilities, providing adaptive swim lessons that help each student learn and thrive in the water.
Benefits for the Body
Children with physical limitations or disabilities find their happy place in the pool. Our muscles and joints can move more easily when we are in warm water. Our bodies become buoyant when in the water, which means that we seem to weigh less; this feeling of weightlessness allows for movement that may be too challenging on land, such as walking, jumping, and the full extension of all four limbs.
Another essential aspect of swimming is the freedom it provides children who use wheelchairs or other mobility aids during their day. In the water, they can experience unparalleled freedom of movement. No need to worry; at Steve Wallen Swim School, our instructors keep the safety of all swimmers at the top of their minds. While building cardiovascular endurance may be challenging for some children with physical disabilities, the water allows for loads of movement.
When joining our school, please share any particular fears, concerns, or expectations with our staff; we want to reassure you that we have your child’s best interests at heart. For example, aspiration or water intake into the lungs is a common concern of parents, so our instructors are keenly aware of where your child’s mouth and nose are in relation to water at all times. Our instructors know effective methods to support children with physical limitations in the water. While supported in this way, your child can experience the joys of swimming, such as splashing, kicking, and floating. In short, the physical benefits of swimming are effective for all.
Inclusive Family Fun
Swimming lessons are inclusive and more than appropriate for the whole family. Unlike many other activities, the entire family can jump into our pool and learn essential life skills while being physically active. Regular swimming lessons are the perfect outing for a family that values its time together. While enjoying swimming lessons, everyone can work on their skills at their own pace and feel successful alongside the rest of the family.
Ideal Learning Environment
We only do swimming lessons at Steve Wallen Swim School, which is why our swim school is perfect for children with sensory challenges. As our swim school doesn’t have noisy splash and fountain features or other potentially distracting or disturbing water park attributes, children who prefer calm, quiet settings can learn in an ideal environment. We can even help you find calmer times throughout the day that would provide the best learning environment for your student. Further, swimming is a great social activity during which children develop friendships and enjoy peer engagement.
Both of our swim school locations offer state-of-the-art facilities in Roseville and El Dorado Hills that include full accessibility and comfortable pool temperatures. Perhaps most importantly, we are a family at Steve Wallen Swim School, and when you join us for swimming lessons, you become part of the family. So, there is no better environment for you and your children to learn how to swim.
