How Often Should Your Child Take Swimming Lessons Growing Up?

Let’s face it, now that school is back in session and pandemic restrictions have largely been lifted, life is indeed as busy as ever! Like most parents, you want to offer your little ones various experiences that will enrich their lives. Learning to swim is undoubtedly a top choice for fun, fitness, and an essential life skill.

It can be challenging to decide how often your child might need lessons to be as successful as they can be in the pool. At Steve Wallen Swim School, we know there are many factors for you to consider, and we are here for you! So let us guide you into making sense of your child’s needs based on many factors, as there is a lot to consider!

Prioritize learning how to swim by beginning today…

It’s important to remember that what works well for one child may not be ideal for another, even in the same family! Every child is a unique and special individual; each child will enter swimming lessons with their own abilities and interests in the water. Each child will drive the pace of their learning.

Setting swim goals makes sense…

  • Begin swimming lessons at an early age; all children should have the opportunity to learn how to swim as an essential life skill
  • All children can benefit from learning to swim, even if it’s just the basics
  • Learning to swim includes how to be safe in and around the water
  • Early introduction to swimming allows time to learn, time to practice, and time for fun!
  • Even infants can learn to float, submerge, blow bubbles, and kick their legs!

Steve Wallen Swim School recommends at least one lesson per week…

Like all skills, practice is needed to keep a level of proficiency. If you can manage at least one private swimming lesson or semi-private swimming lesson a week, your child can maintain their swimming abilities. However, two to three days a week will provide more significant opportunities for progress and increased endurance. Most children learn best through the repetition of skills and reinforcement of learning. By swimming two to three times a week, your child will be provided with expert, consistent swimming instruction.

Many children love the water so much that they will beg you to bring them to our state-of-the-art pools! When children are eager to learn, it’s best to provide them with the opportunity! Consistency will encourage the less keen child, showing that their practice is paying off and increasing their comfort level in the water.
