Beyond Submersion: Teaching Your Child How To Jump Into Deep Water! Register For Swim Lessons at Steve Wallen Swim School in Roseville and El Dorado Hills

While it’s important to remember that each skill is presented at Steve Wallen Swim School when your child is ready to learn it, skills are still presented in their logical progression. Your child’s learning is designed carefully and is based on our decades of experience. Our highly qualified swim instructors follow our own teaching model of continuous evaluation, continuous learning, and a “level free” system that allows your child the freedom to learn constantly and never be held back.

So, suppose your child has now mastered the fun art of submersion and is entirely comfortable dunking and exploring the watery depths. In that case, they can now be introduced to a fun, new skill that will also go a very long way to increasing their safety in and around the water. Our rainbow milestone ribbon demonstrates your child’s ability to jump into the water from the pool’s edge while not wearing goggles, turn around, and swim back to the pool’s edge, all without assistance.

Of course, your child is closely supervised and within arm’s reach of their instructor the entire time. The purpose of not wearing goggles during this skill is to replicate real-life scenarios during which an accidental fall into the water may happen. Should this occur,  your child would not be wearing goggles, so they should be comfortable jumping into the water while not wearing them.

Mastering the skill of jumping into deeper water…

Mastering the skill of jumping into deeper water, turning, and swimming back to the safety of the pool edge replicates a real-life situation: a sudden, unexpected water entry. By learning through practice in a safe, controlled setting such as a swim lesson with Steve Wallen Swim School, your child will build their confidence. It may take some time, but your child will develop this potentially life-saving skill in a step-by-step fashion.

At first, they may require their instructors’ assistance to enter the water and hold them as they move through the water and then return to the edge. Over time, and with practice, the assistance from their instructor will gradually be reduced. When your child is ready, they will be closely supervised through the skill as they complete it independently!

Once your child can demonstrate this skill competently, different skills can be developed on its basis. For example, learning to evaluate the water for safe diving environments such as appropriate depths and any hazards, and then learning how to dive! Other ways to enter the water can also be discovered. Next, your child can further develop their swimming endurance by increasing the distance they swim away from the edge after jumping in! You can place sinking toys and objects in the water to challenge your child to retrieve them from the bottom to further develop breath control and diving skills.

Every swimming skill taught at Steve Wallen Swim School has value, either as an integral part of a valuable stroke, or as a critical component of a water safety skill, or both. Nothing we do at our school is frivolous. Everything we do is centered on your child’s safety, wellbeing, and development into a lifelong swimmer.
