Baby and Me Swimming Lessons – When To Start?

Amongst swimming schools and pools, there has been significant debate regarding at which age it is safe and productive to begin swimming lessons. In our extensive experience, the earlier a child learns to swim and be water safe, the better! Therefore, we start our Baby and Me swimming lessons as early as four months old! We can set you and your child on the path to aquatic success by starting at such a young age.

There are many reasons why we firmly believe in starting lessons at this young age. Early lessons introduce them to the water while being accompanied by their favorite people: mom and dad. These early lessons serve as an essential milestone and foundation to begin their lifelong journey of learning the life skill of swimming. Our Baby and Me swim classes are recommended for beginning swimmers and parents who are unsure how to hold and move babies safely through the water. Our expertly led lessons help acclimate babies to the water by teaching them water awareness and water safety skills. Further, early swimming lessons increase confidence in the water, allowing your baby to be relaxed; as they grow, this comfort will enable them to concentrate on learning more complex swimming skills.

Following several Baby and Me lesson sessions, you will find that your baby has developed developmental skills such as what to do and what not to do when swimming or during bath and shower time. In addition, babies can learn breath control and how to blow bubbles! But, perhaps most importantly, you and your baby will learn to love all the water has to offer!

Feel free to visit either of our swim school locations in El Dorado Hills and Roseville to see what we are all about, tour our state-of-the-art facility, and observe a class! Because your baby is not yet potty trained, a swim diaper is a must. While disposable is fine, there are now many excellent cost-effective, environmentally friendly reusable swim diapers with bright, fun colors and patterns. In addition, a favorite tub time toy is fine to bring as it will provide a source of fun and familiarity!

Remember to bring water and an age-appropriate snack for your baby, as swimming is hard work! Depending on your baby’s age, you may want a warm bottle, and, of course, feel free to breastfeed! A hooded towel will give your little one cozy warmth after their splash session. Swimming lessons are also a great way to meet other parents with children of a similar age; building your community is essential to encouraging your child’s development.

Please know that we want you and your baby to be successful in the water; you don’t need to be a great swimmer (although we can certainly help with that, too!), nor do you even need to be comfortable in the water! We teach comfortably, using song and play to ensure everyone has a beautiful experience. Our affordable lessons incorporate encouragement and praise to build everyone’s confidence and comfort. While many adults are uncomfortable in the water due to a lack of exposure or negative experiences, babies naturally love the water. It’s crucial that we build on babies’ natural love of the water while they are still very young. Come join us today!
