Ariel’s Thoughts of being a Swimming Lesson Instructor with Wallen Swim
My Experiences as a Swim Instructor at Steve Wallen Swim School in El Dorado Hills
I first started working as a swim instructor at Steve Wallen Swim School 8 years ago teaching swimming lessons to infants, kids, and adults of all skill levels. I grew up swimming competitively on the Broadstone Barracudas and then moved on to swim for the Sierra Marlins as well as the Folsom High School Swim Team. Being as passionate as I am about swimming, I knew that SWSS would be a great place for me after graduating from high school. I regularly taught swim lessons at SWSS while in school at Folsom Lake College. I then transferred to UCLA to finish off my undergraduate degree and continued to work at SWSS when I had the opportunity and was home for winter or summer breaks. After graduating from UCLA, I worked in Los Angeles for a few years. Recently I moved back to the Sacramento area to begin my MBA degree at UC Davis, and was also eager to let Steve and Kaleb know that I would be available on a regular basis to teach while in school again! Steve and Kaleb are truly wonderful people, and I am so fortunate to have met them and teach swim lessons at their swim school. We have an amazing group of instructors working here, and we all mesh extremely well to make a great team!
As much as I enjoy teaching all of these kids how to swim, they’ve also taught me a lot in return and selfishly; I think that is my favorite part. The simplicity and innocence of their happiness and confidence after learning to push off by themselves or swimming a whole lap on their own for the first time is absolutely priceless. It has been a great reminder for me to take life one step at a time! Being Ms. Ariel has also had some hilarious perks. It is pretty common for my students to ask where my tail is or to whisper comments to their parents, “Mom, Ariel is real?!” Another little one told me her dream is to be a mermaid just like me when she grows up!
I have the pleasure of working with infants, kids and adults of all ages and skill levels. There is such a diverse range of individuals coming in for swim lessons, from learning to blow bubbles and putting their face in the water to leaning more advanced stroke techniques and racing strategies. The variability between students makes teaching each class an absolute blast and keeps me motivated to try new teaching techniques in order to help my students succeed in every way I can. After being away for a few years I am so happy to see some of my students that I remember in diapers now swimming in our swim clinics and on swim teams! I am thrilled to be back in the pool and anticipate a continuation of the great experiences I remember having at Steve Wallen Swim School in El Dorado Hills.
